Meet Alexey, one of the most inspirational young boys you’ll come across. As one of our generous supporters, I know you’ll be moved by his incredible journey.
Alexey was just a fragile one month old baby when his parents got the frightening news. He’d had a stroke which caused bleeding in the brain and a tumour was discovered growing in his abdomen. Despite two operations, including brain surgery, Alexey failed to develop like other babies. He wasn’t moving much, and his distraught parents knew something was wrong with the left side of his body. By 17 months of age, Alexey was having hundreds of seizures every day.
“He was regressing with the seizures and by four years old, he was back to being like a newborn,” his mum Anna said.
The only cure was to undergo more frightening surgery to remove half of his brain. Alexey was only the second person in WA to undergo a complex hemispherectomy to remove the damaged right hemisphere of his brain. The surgery went well and afterwards Alexey began to thrive, but it took three years of intensive rehab for him to learn how to walk, talk and move his left arm.
Alexey was the first child in Australia to use a state-of-the-art robotic arm, funded by the Foundation, to strengthen his muscles and regain the use of his left arm.
The Australian-first technology helped turn Alexey’s life around produced stunning results in WA kids undergoing rehabilitation, helping a generation of kids gain movement in their upper limbs and changing their lives for the better. For Alexey, the robotic technology set him on the path to sporting glory.
Regaining the use of his left arm meant he could take part in hydrotherapy and learn how to swim. Discovering a love for the activity, he progressed from rehab to competitive swimming and hasn’t looked back.
As part of a national swimming squad of his club, Alexey competes nationally and in recent years won multiple state para championships. He holds five Australian swimming records for his age. At 16, Alexey’s future looks bright as he sets his sights set on making the Australian Paralympics squad.
While his left arm will never function as well as his right and he lives with cerebral palsy and vision loss, Alexey has embraced a life filled with happiness and joy.
“People want to give for a cure but sometimes we can’t fix things and we need to learn to live with it. It’s very important to support children and families who have fought so hard to survive and give those children the best care and the best opportunities in life,” said Anna.

Childhood should be carefree and filled with fun and laughter. And that’s how life was for Cyrus, until he was suddenly struck down with a devastating illness.
He went from being sporty and robust to urgently needing a heart transplant. Your generous support has already made a real difference to WA’s sick kids, but there’s more we can do to help children like Cyrus overcome incredible challenges.
At just eight, Cyrus was quickly flown from Bunbury to Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH) where he was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a serious disease of the heart muscle that can lead to heart failure.
His mum and dad were told Cyrus would need to wait for a suitable donor for a heart transplant. Just when they thought things couldn’t get any worse, Cyrus had two strokes and was placed in an induced coma for two terrifying weeks. At one point, the doctors were close to turning off his life support.
But Cyrus miraculously pulled through and underwent more than 11 hours of complex surgery to receive a new heart and a second chance at life.
A robotic arm at Perth Children’s Hospital has played a major role in Cyrus’ recovery, helping regain movement in his hand which was permanently curled in a vicelike grip.
With rehab robotics rapidly evolving, a new more advanced robotic arm is coming soon to PCH and will revolutionise care. But technology moves fast, so we need to too.
